Professional Development

NCSCaLE supports employees who seek professional development opportunities. Professional development increases retention, builds confidence and credibility, improves efficiencies and reenergizes the employee. There may be opportunities that you seek out on your own, or your supervisor or colleague may recommend specific training. It is important to discuss training options with your supervisor first, to ensure it coincides with the business directive, but also, supervisors offer advice and feedback, and may bring other training or ideas to your attention that you had not previously considered. Please do not disregard training or certification because of a fee. If there is a fee involved, speak to your supervisor about the possibility of requesting funding.

Staff Professional Development Program

The NCSCaLE Staff Professional Development Program provides competitive funding for full-time, permanent staff (excluding directors) to pursue meaningful professional development opportunities. The award supports activities that “build staff capacity and skills for the future success of the division” and encourages employees to “dream big” in shaping their continuing education journeys.

What the Award Is

This award offers up to $3,000 per proposal to support non-mandatory professional development such as conferences, certifications, coaching, training, or other learning experiences that align with NCSCaLE’s mission and values. Activities must go beyond required job training or certification renewals.

Who Can Apply

All full-time, permanent NCSCaLE employees (except directors) are eligible to apply, as long as they have approval from their supervisor and SMT representative.

How to Receive the Award

To be considered, staff must:

Submit a proposal (up to $3,000) describing how the opportunity will benefit the division.

  • Applications should include a narrative outlining “how the proposed professional development would benefit the Division through their enhanced ability to contribute in their current role.”
  • Obtain supervisor and SMT representative approval before submitting.
  • Apply by the annual deadline (i.e., April 18 for FY2027).
  • Have their proposal reviewed by SMT using the division’s evaluation rubric.
  • If selected, complete the activity between July 1 and June 30 of the award year and share what they learned through a presentation, video, or written reflection.
