Emergency Information

Guidance for emergency preparedness at the McKimmon Center.

Your Safety Matters

The McKimmon Center serves as a hub for continuing education and professional development across the NC State University community and beyond. As part of our commitment to public service and operational excellence, we maintain comprehensive emergency procedures to help maintain a safe environment for all individuals on site.

We work closely with NC State’s emergency services to ensure that everyone knows what to do if something unexpected occurs. We ask all visitors to familiarize themselves with the following emergency procedures to help ensure a safe experience for everyone.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency, follow the instructions of authorities. If no guidance is available, use your best judgment to stay safe.

Fire Response Protocols

In the event of a fire, activate the nearest alarm and evacuate the building right away.

Emergency Evacuation Drills

Evacuation drills help prepare building occupants for emergencies. These unannounced drills simulate real conditions and support safe, efficient evacuation. North Carolina law requires annual drills in all non-residential buildings with fire alarm systems.

What to Expect During a Drill

  • Loud alarms
  • Brief disruption (typically under 10 minutes)
  • Possible exposure to weather — bring a jacket or umbrella if needed

During a Fire Alarm

  • Exit the building promptly
  • Use stairs, not elevators
  • Go to your designated assembly area (see the section below)
  • Remain outside until cleared by emergency personnel

Your Responsibilities

  • Know your building’s evacuation procedures
  • Treat every alarm as real
  • Identify your assembly location (see the section below)
  • Take essential personal items with you
  • If someone is unable to evacuate, call 911 and provide their exact location

Please visit NC State’s Fire and Life Safety Department website for more information on campus fire safety.

Emergency Evacuation Assembly Areas

Exit the building immediately using the nearest exit. Do not re-enter until cleared by emergency personnel. Do not use the elevator in a fire emergency.

Assemble at one of the following locations:

  • In front of building by the flagpoles (grassy area)
  • Sidewalk near the Joyner Visitor Center

Please visit NC State’s Emergency and Information website for more information on evacuations and assembly areas.

Severe Weather Shelter Areas

In case of tornado or severe weather, move to a secure location inside the building:

  • Weather shelter areas shown on Evacuation Maps
    • Maps are located in common areas throughout the building, as well as inside classrooms.
  • Lowest floor possible

Please visit NC State’s Emergency and Information website for more information on severe weather alerts.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

If someone collapses:

  • Dial 911 or 919.515.3000 (University Police non-emergency number)
  • Send someone to retrieve an AED
  • Begin chest compressions immediately — push hard, fast and deep in the center of the chest
  • Apply AED pads and follow voice prompts from the device

AED locations:

  • 1st floor, inside Room 145 (file cabinet)
  • 1st floor, outside Room 10
  • 2nd floor, outside Room 231

Please visit NC State’s Emergency Management & Mission Continuity website for more information on the AED program.
